Nuisance calls are targetted

- David Wren

Rutherglen residents will hope to see a reduction in nuisance calls after new financial implications were mooted.

Bosses of companies responsible for nuisance calls could be held personally liable for new fines which could reach up to £500,000.

Two in five households in the UK have been forced to unplug their landlines to avoid nuisance calls.

More than half of people across the country have been woken at anti-social hours by nuisance calls.

Vix Leyton, Home Comms experts at www.broadbandchoices.co.uk, said:“As more and more people conduct their business via mobile and more typically text rather than speak, you would think the spectre of the nuisance call would have been dealt with but our research shows it’s still a massive problem.

“GDPR means aggressive and intrusive marketing has to be kept out of our inboxes, but more needs to be done to stop us being badgered in our own homes to avoid the last resort of Brits unplugging from landlines permanently.”

Last year, the Scottish Government released its £50,000 Nuisance Call Action Plan earlier this week to raise awareness of the issue of scam and nuisance calls.

That ccame as statistics revealed over half of calls made to Glasgow telephone numbers over a three-year period, including Rutherglen and Cambuslang, were nuisance calls.

Local MSP Clare Haughey backed the campaign in 2017.
