A GALA DAY OUT FOR THE FAMILY

Countdown to Landemer Day

- Jonathan Geddes

The countdown to Landemer Day is well underway.

Rutherglen residents will be hoping the sun comes out on Saturday for the biggest day of the year in the town, although weather reports suggest it will be cloudy but dry.

The main highlight will see Rutherglen High pupil Kaitlyn Crawford crowned as Landemer Queen on the Main Street, and organisers have put together a busy programme of attractions.

There will be plenty of stalls representing different organisations lining the streets as well as a climbing wall, a funfair and more.

At 11.30am, it will be Kaitlyn’s big moment.

She will be joined by her ladies in waiting, Molly McBride and Angela Clemente, from Rutherglen High.

The rest of the Queen’s Court will consist of Morgan Lee and Rachel Campbell, from Cathkin High, Amy Duffin and Kayla Jackson, from Trinity High, and Carole-Anne Hopkins and Alexandra Pollock from Stonelaw High. The Queen will be crowned by AnneMarie McNair, the head teacher of Cathkin High.

Following a short speech, Kaitlyn wi l l officially open Landemer Day, with entertainment then following from the Cambuslang Parish Church Pipe Band.

The Queen and her entourage will be whisked away to the Masonic Hall on Melrose Avenue for the traditional Landemer lunch, while an array of entertainment takes place on the Main Street stage.

Performing will the local band Rebrand, local songstress Rebekah Kirk and the singer Toby Erskine and Missing Focus.

Also appearing again will be old favourites the Bronx Showband.

The event should conclude around 4pm.

Organisers have asked that youngsters avoid buying silly string, to avoid the mess that has blighted the day in the past.

Landemer secretary Ian Duncan said: “The Landemer Committee are working very hard to provide the local community with a day to be proud of and we ask, please do not buy silly string and spray paint because this only detracts from the special day – help us to make Landemer Day a day you can be proud of.”

Already Landemer related events have been taking place, with youngsters taking part in three fun runs in Overtoun Park, and Music in Hospitals performing for residents in the David Walker House, paid for by the Landemer committee.

Next week will also see a football tournament for S1 and 2 plus P7 pupils taking place too.
