SNP should get on with the day job

-

The SNP spent the weekend at their party conference and one of the main topics back on the agenda was independence.

It feels like they are intent on ignoring Scotland’s schools, hospitals and the majority of Scots that do not want a referendum rerun.

This is surprising as polls and recent elections have shown that there is just not the appetite there once was for independence, especially with Brexit looming.

Nicola Sturgeon’s hope that EU withdrawal would increase support for breaking up the UK has failed to materialise, according to the latest chapter of the British Social Attitudes Survey.

Whilst Scotland voted to remain in the EU it was not by an overwhelming majority and even within the SNP party there are those who want out of the EU.

Until we know what the future looks like after Brexit, it would seem that the Scottish people would prefer there was not another independence referendum.

It appears clear that even the SNP party is at odds with each other, riven with splits over both independence and its plan for yet another referendum.

We know that Scotland doesn’t need another referendum – it’s divisive and the constant threat from the Scottish Government is causing harm to our economy.

Why would companies choose Scotland when at the moment our future is so unstable? The problem for the rest of us though is that the more time the nationalists spend bickering, the less time they have for running Scotland’s Government, supporting our economy and improving schools.

It is clear that the SNP will always put securing a second independence referendum before Scotland’s schools, hospitals and the economy.

Last year when I ran for council I promised that I would fight for there to be no second referendum and I still believe that’s what people want.

I urge that the Scottish Government listen and get on with the day job, because the council and this area will struggle until there is more stability at Holyrood.
