Fears over closure

Rutherglen Post Office shuts suddenly again

- Jonathan Geddes

Uncertainty surrounds the future of Rutherglen Post Office once more – after it closed abruptly last week.

The office, based in the Premier convenience store on Main Street, has been shut since Thursday – following the resignation of the postmaster. This means locals wishing to use the service must travel to either Cambuslang or Burnside.

This latest inconvenience comes just months after the office closed for a five week spell for “operational reasons”. This prompted claims by elderly locals that they would “go hungry” as they couldn’t travel to collect their pensions from elsewhere.

Rutherglen Central and North councillor Janine Calikes called the situation “unacceptable”.

She said:“I’ve been in touch with Post Office Counters Ltd and my understanding is that the temporary post master at Rutherglen did not give notice that he intended to close the service.

“It shut suddenly last Thursday, leaving my constituents to have to head to Cambuslang or Burnside to use a Post Office.

“This is unacceptable and I hope that the Post Office does everything in its power to get the facility reopened as soon as possible.”

Clare Haughey, Rutherglen MSP, attacked the “poor service” that Rutherglen residents have received.

She said :“It is very disappointing that Rutherglen has once again been left without a post office.

“Quite frankly people are fed up with the poor service that is being provided to them.

“The post office closed without notice on Thursday and there is still no sign of it reopening.

“I’ve been in contact with POC and insisted that they reopen as quickly as possible.“

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Following the resignation of the postmaster, Rutherglen Post Office closed temporarily on Thursday, June 14.

“We know how important Post Office services are to people in Rutherglen and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.

“Any customers wishing to access Post Office services may do so from any convenient Post Office branch, including Burnside and Toryglen Post Offices.

“We would like to assure customers that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.”
