Jobs blow for tradesmen

- Marc McLean

Dozens of skilled workers have lost their jobs after a Rutherglen-based construction firm went bust last week.

MMPS, which specialises in the refurbishment of properties across Scotland and the North of England, employed 36 people across a variety of trades and had been operating for nearly 20 years.

However, serious money problems led to company director Billy McEwan calling in administrators last week in a desperate attempt to save the business.

Yesterday (Tuesday), it was announced that 33 workers across a variety of trades have been made redundant, while three employees have been kept on for a short period by administrators to help wind down the business.

Joint administrator Stuart Robb said:“Having now had an opportunity to assess the company’s financial and operational position, and with there being little interest from third parties in acquiring what remained of the business, it quickly became apparent that continuing to trade the business was not an option.

“As such, the difficult decision has been taken to cease trading with the vast majority of the company’s employees having now been made redundant.

“Our primary focus in the short term will be to provide those employees affected with the appropriate support in submitting their redundancy related claims and assisting where we can to help them secure future employment.”

MMPS was based at Cathcart Place in the town and the company’s workforce includes plumbers, heating engineers, joiners, bricklayers and electricians.
