Fly-tipping disgrace leaves OAPs enraged

Haven for vermin

- Murray Spooner

Spittal pensioners have slammed fly-tippers after a recent dumping attracted vermin to their front doors.

Furious residents of flats on Dunure Drive hit out at a private landlord who renovated a flat and tossed the remains out the front of their mixed tenured building.

Foxes, rats and mice had been seen mingling in and around the heap which included household rubbish and food waste.

After the Reformer attended the address to investigate last week, South Lanarkshire Council uplifted the debris.

However, home owners were still disappointed it took more than a month for it to be cleared up. One resident said: “When environmental health lifted it all up there was mice running out of it.” Neighbour Thomas Flanagan, 68, added: “I’ve seen the rats at it.

“People walk past once they’ve been to the Chinese takeaway and then dump their bits in it.”

A home owner had arranged an uplift of renovation debris from outside the block. But before it was collected, further waste, dumped by “unidentified individuals”, began to accumulate which may have delayed the pick up.

The mess was one of three flytipping spots in the area including a couch dumped on Lugar Place.

A 74-year-old resident said: “The place is becoming a bit of a cowp. It makes it look like a run down area.”

Daniel Lowe, executive director of housing and technical services said: “The council has now cleared the waste and debris from the area and environmental health will be contacting residents to remind them of their general responsibility to keep the common property clean.

“There is a £200 fixed penalty charge for anyone caught flytipping and anyone observing such anti-social behaviour can report it anonymously by phoning Dumb Dumpers on 08452 30 40 90.”
