MSP tables motion to celebrate cup win

Clare pays tribute to Cathkin High team

- Murray Spooner

Cathkin High held a special ceremony to celebrate the school’s senior football team’s recent historic victory.

The Cambuslang secondary beat St Ninian’s High 4-2 on penalties at Hampden Park last month to be crowned national champions.

And as a result, the players lifted the Scottish Schools Senior Shield for the first time in Cathkin’s history.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey visited the school on Friday to join in the celebrations.

And the politician tabled a motion to the Scottish Parliament which she presented to each of the players and the school at the event.

The Rutherglen MSP’s motion namechecked the squad as well as coaches Mr Lindsay and Mr Haldane. It was also signed by a number of different Labour, Conservative and SNP MSPs.

Ms Haughey said: “I am incredibly grateful to Cathkin High for organising Friday’s event. It was great occasion to mark the team’s achievement, and I hope the entire squad and coaches are proud of their efforts.

“Winning the Scottish Schools senior shield is no mean feat, and it is certainly a cause for celebration.

“With Scotland’s absence at the World Cup, I’m sure Cathkin’s success can give the people of Cambuslang something to cheer about instead.”
