Online scam warning for younger people

Campaign launch

- Jonathan Geddes

Rutherglen and Cambuslang Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) have warned people to be aware of online scams.

They said there is a particular danger to those aged under 24.

Those aged 18-24 are considered to be the most likely to encounter online scams yet the most likely not to bother reporting them.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang CAB manager Sharon Hampson said: “Last week we launched our scams awareness campaign, aimed at making local people more vigilant to spot scams and report them.

“Evidence shows that younger people often think they are less likely to be hit by scams but in fact this is not the case.

“Many scammers will develop particular techniques that are aimed more at young people; for example, online scams, ticketing scams and subscription traps.

“Our message to young people is to be savvy about scams and make sure they don’t get caught out.”

Ms Hampson urged locals to always use caution when dealing with offers that seems too good to be true.

She added: “If you receive emails or texts out of the blue offering what looks like a great deal be sceptical.

“Check out the sender, ask your friends and family about them and don’t hand over any money until you are absolutely sure the offer is real.

“A scam is a crime and reporting it to the police or trading standards will help stop others falling victim to it.”
