Big crowds enjoy festival

It’s a fun time for everyone

- Graham Miller

Hundreds braved the elements to support Saturday’s Summerfest on Cambuslang Main Street.

The town’s annual festival saw families huddle under hoods and brollies to enjoy all the acts who took to the stage.

Singer Sharon Nimmo belted out a string of hits before talented youngsters from AJ Dancing showed off their moves.

These acts were among several to take to the stage as the communities of Cambuslang and Halfway did their best to defy the downpour and enjoy the day.

A variety of stalls were erected along Main Street, with organisations such as Healthy n’ Happy Community Trust, CamGlen radio station, Vaslan and Halfway community council on hand to help provide fun activities.

There was face painting, bouncy castles and adventure rides for kids.

A highlight for many was the awards ceremony which saw several people recognised for their valuable contribution to the community.

Hosted by Councillor Walter Brogan, the event saw awards given to volunteer Jill Scoular; Cambuslang Rotary Club member, Nigel Wunsch; young Healthy n’ Happy volunteer, Jack McGinty; fundraiser Charlie Jones; Sheila Lynch, head teacher at West Coats Primary School; West Coats Primary pupils Francesca Fairweather and Eilidh Lamb for their winning artwork; Anne Marie McKenzie and her team at McColl’s Halfway.

MSPs Clare Haughey MSP and James Kelly, and South Lanarkshire Council leader John Ross were among those who presented awards.

John Edgar, chairman of the Summerfest committee, paid tribute to former councillor Clare McColl, who sadly passed away last month.

He said: “Clare was a huge supporter of Summerfest and loved and respected by all, regardless of their politics.

“I’m sure she’s looking down on us all approvingly now.”

John added: “Despite the rain I think everyone had a good time and on behalf of the committee I’d like to thank them all for their continued support.”
