Bright start squandered
Cambus fail to deal with Killie rally
Cambuslang threw away the lead in this match in what was a disappointing away display.
The Cambus started brightly, winning the first scrum and converting a penalty after seven minutes to go 3-0 ahead.
Their scrum half then raced through from the 22 line to score the opening try. The conversion gave Cambuslang a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes.
Ten minutes later the home side fought back when its full back was tackled short of the line but managed to wrestle and reach the goal line for a well-deserved try.
The conversion was missed, resulting in a 10-5 score.
The next move by the visitors was turned over by the Killie forwards and who broke through the defence to score.
In the closing minutes of the half Kilmarnock earned a penalty and went ahead for the first time at 13-10.
From the restart kick Kilmarnock won the ball then were given a penalty within range but opted for the uncontested scrum.
Thornton picked up and led a charge, the ruck ball was secured and the second phase ball went to Smith who dropped it with Cambus clearly offside.
Brown picked up the loose ball and crashed over for a try.
Then McWhirter did the honours with the conversion, putting Kilmarnock 20-10 ahead just three minutes into the second half.
The Ayrshire side put the foot on the gas and crashed a try in over at the corner, before a great touchline conversion increased the home lead to 27-10 with 15 minutes of the half played.
Cambus replied with a converted try, putting the pressure on the home side.
However, the Kilmarnock defence held firm for the remaining 10 minutes of the game.
Cambuslang are still sitting in midtable and this Saturday are away to Dalziel, who lost their last home match 36-19 to Cumnock and are rooted at the bottom on just five points.
