Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie has praised his young athletes for showing plenty of heart competing in the Novice Boxing Championships at the weekend.

Saif Akram and Hassan Saleem both lost out in their semi-final bouts to a judges’decision, but put up a determined fight at the event at the Ravenscraig Sports Complex in Motherwell.

The previous weekend Cambuslang lad Lewis Millar and Josh Bell were eliminated from the competition in their weight categories.

All boys are members of Durie’s Gym in Rutherglen.

Head coach Archie said:“I was so proud of our boys and, as it happens, the lads who beat our Durie’s boxers all went on and won there respective Scottish novice finals.

“So great performances from our lads, they will take from the experience.”

Saif lost a unanimous decision against Meadowbank ABC youth Brayden Clarkson, while Hassan lost a split decision to Omar Khan, from Barn ABC.
