Read all about it as group get creative
Comic book printed
A Cambuslang woman is hoping to be fully booked soon - by releasing her own comic book.
Caitlin Truswell, who suffers from the Williams syndrome developmental disorder, is part of a literacy and reading group who became fed up at a lack of reading material for their age group.
They then decided to create their own story, and the idea for Jason’s Big Adventure came from there.
The group are supported by the charity Empower Glasgow, a service for adults with learning disabilities who want to develop their skills and increase their independence, with the book telling the story of a young man celebrating his 21st birthday in Glasgow with his friends, who ends up getting lost and having to find his way back home.
Caitlin was part of a group that attended the recent comic con in Glasgow with preview copies of the comic, and they are now hoping to crowd fund for further books.
She said: “For me seeing the comic finished was really special, we came up with a good story and it was interesting. I am proud of what we achieved.
“It’s important that we get to share this story with others, I want other people to enjoy the story and understand the message about Keep Safe.”
James Watt, Empower Glasgow co-ordinator, added: “We had been trying to find books at a lower reading grade but which had adult themes and featured adults as the main characters.
“Everything we came across was for children. Our service is all about making things possible, achievable and so we found the opportunity in this- if there wasn’t anything then we will write it.”
Caitlin even pops up in the book, illustrated by Glasgow artist Jack Potter, as a friend of Jason.
