Are DUP ensuring May is in office but not in power?

-

politicians across all parties, are calling for a referendum on the final deal, commonly referred to as a People’s Vote.

I believe that a Labour Government can deliver what is in the best interest of the whole of the UK, which is why I will always welcome the opportunity for a General Election, but with each passing day, I believe the argument for a People’s Vote becomes more compelling.

This is not without its own issues, referendums are blunt instruments, they create division and oversimplify complicated issues by turning them into a binary choice.

Not only that, but holding a second vote may be seen as a failure to respect the outcome of the first referendum and could potentially lead to a rise in far right nationalist parties in the UK.

The difficulty is deciding how best to proceed in a highly imperfect situation. The terms of how we should leave the EU were not on the ballot paper in 2016.

With the Conservative Government’s 2017 manifesto costing them their majority, and with parliament likely to vote against Theresa May’s deal and seemingly unable to reach a majority on any alternative, it is becoming increasingly clear that the only democratic option left is to offer the country a final say on whether to accept the deal that has been negotiated or remain in the European Union.
