Christmas spirit at primaries
Schools host fairs with host of festive favourites
This year’s Christmas celebrations got off to a festive flier with a host of fayres across the area.
Calderwood and Burnside Primary schools got in on the action last Saturday, when both welcomed big crowds through the doors, with lots of games, stalls and tasty food on offer.
Kids were also treated to a meeting with Santa in his grotto, as well as Burnsie the friendly snowman as Burnside was turned into a winter wonderland.
Calderwood Primary Parent Council revealed that this year’s event was the biggest and best yet – raising an incredible profit of £7088.
A spokeswoman for the parent council said: “We’ve been blown away by the support and generosity of the Calderwood community – it’s the most we’ve ever made.
“All of this money will go directly to equipment and projects to improve the experience for all Calderwoodies.
“We are so grateful to all those who donated, baked, volunteered and spent.
“We particularly thankful for the team who worked so hard to make this fayre happen, for the fantastic parental support and the contribution from the community and local businesses.
“Special thanks also goes to the brilliant staff at Calderwood. Santa definitely sprinkled some special magic dust on our fayre.”
Burnside Primary’s head teacher Helen McGarvey reported a huge turnout and a great atmosphere at the Christmas fayre, where visitors browsed crafts, toys, baking and plant stalls.
As well as ‘beat the goalie’ and inflatables, pupils enjoyed a visit from Santa and a musical rendition from members of the school choir.
Both the tombola and the raffle proved popular, with ticket holders hoping to win one of the school’s 14 themed bumper hampers, which included ‘movie night,’ ‘baking’ and ‘afternoon tea.’
Ms McGarvey extended a huge thank you to the organisaing committee, whose hard work made the event a great success.
