Help stop it being lonely this Christmas

- JANINE CALIKES SNP councillor for Rutherglen Central and North

I hope everyone has had a wonderful, safe and happy Christmas.

At this time of year, it is lovely to take some time to spend with family and friends.

These are the times when we create memories that last a lifetime.

However, the festive season is not a happy time for everyone, particularly those facing social isolation and loneliness.

Scotland has become one of the first countries in the world to develop a national strategy to deal with this serious problem.

Scottish Government minister for older people and equalities, Christina McKelvie, has announced £1 million over the next two years to support and expand innovative projects and approaches to bring people together.

Social isolation can affect anyone, but is particularly prevalent in older people as well as new mothers, and those with additional support needs. I know that, as a community here in Rutherglen, we are a caring bunch – if you are aware of someone in your street who may be at risk of social isolation, why not knock their door and check how they are doing.

Do they have everything they need? Would they like you to sit a while and chat over a cup of tea?

During “the beast from the east” last winter, I was so heartened to note how well the people of Rutherglen looked after each other as a community, fetching shopping for those who couldn’t get out, and working together to grit pavements and dig cars out of the snow.

Speaking of grit, with the cold weather well and truly here, please be sure to check that your nearest grit bin is still there and is filled.

If you need to request a new bin or refill, you can do so by popping into a council Q&A office, emailing roadsandtransportation@ southlanarkshire.gov.uk or calling 0303 123 1015.

The council ensures, as far as possible, that main roads are safe and clear to use – gritting around 52 per cent of our roads when ice or snow is forecast, more than the Scottish average of 47 per cent.

They also grit main footpaths in town centres when ice or snow is forecast. If there has been a lot of snow they will clear and grit other main footpaths.

Generally, though, footpaths in residential areas will not be gritted – so please be prepared and remember to assist those less able if you are fit and able yourself.

If there is an extended period of sub-zero temperatures or significant snowfall, the council will give consideration to other roads on a needs basis, such as critical health issues and bereavement issues.

You can call the above number to find out about this, or check the council’s website.

I wish you all a very happy new year when it comes.
