Lang joy at going up

-

There were twists and turns along the way, but May 2018 brought the news that Cambuslang Rangers had been hoping for – promotion back to the top flight of the junior game.

It was the third successive promotion for the Camby Gers, and came after a difficult few months for the club, which had seen manager Paul McColl shot in February.

On the pitch, the Lang had enjoyed a terrific run of form as 2018, with four wins in the early part of the year leaving the club firmly in the top four.

After McColl was shot, the club put off-field distractions aside to draw with league leaders Petershill and hammer Maryhill.

But a 2-0 defeat to Irvine at the start of April started a poor run of form where they only notched one win in eight games.

That placed their promotion hopes back in jeopardy and they slipped outside the top four for the first time in the season.

However a spirited run of form as the season entered its final phase saw them secure promotion with a 2-0 win over Darvel, finishing second in the table.

Boss McColl was by now back in the dugout, and he told the Reformer how much the club’s promotion had meant to him.

He said:“Two promotions and a league win, you don’t take those moments for granted.

“When we were winning games folk were saying we were definitely going up and then when we lost a few they were saying we had blown it.

“We had been up the top of the league for most of the year and when there was four games left there was a lot of pressure on the players. But we told them just listen to us, you’re doing really well.”
