Nine-man Lang enjoy spot kick success in Cup

-

Cambuslang Rangers found themselves down to nine men against Rossvale on Saturday - and still managed to progress to the next round of the Cup.

The Somervell Park men triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to go into the hat for the next round, shaking off the disappointment of conceding a last gasp equalizer that sent the match to penalties in the first place.

Darren Ramsey had the first real chance of the game, but shot over early on.

Rossvale’s first chances came after they won a free-kick, which was thumped straight into the Cambuslang wall before a decent cross into the box caused problems, and led to a chance for striker Chris Zok, who fired over the crossbar.

Then came problems for Cambuslang, firstly when Jamie Hay was sent off for a second yellow card just before the break.

And with the game still evenly poised, Cambuslang striker John Gemmell was given his marching orders five minutes into the second half after being booked twice in quick succession.

However with their backs against the wall Cambuslang proceeded to take the lead.

A good cross by substitute Callum McRobbie found the head of Chris Duff, and his header sailed in to give the Lang a 1-0 advantage.

Some sustained pressure by Rossvale followed, with Zok hitting the upright and missing another good chance.

Rossvale then hit the bar twice as Cambuslang tried to hold on, but as the game entered the last few minutes they conceded a penalty.

Liam McGonigle was brought down in the box and Zok stepped up to level the match.

There then followed some late pressure as the hosts searched for a winner, but the Lang held on to take it to penalty kicks.

And they then held their nerve better to win it 4-3 on spot kicks and book a place in the last 16.

Cambuslang now return to league duties this weekend when they host Petershill with a 1.45pm kick off.
