We’re ready to Rock and roll with cup win

- JONATHAN GEDDES

Rutherglen basketball star Gareth Murray has backed Glasgow Rocks to get over the finish line and finally claim cup glory. The forward starred as the Rocks saw off Manchester Giants on Sunday to reach the BBL Cup final. The Rocks have flirted with trophies in recent years but have never managed to win anything. But Gareth, from Farme Cross, believes now is the time for Glasgow to take another step forward – even against the daunting prospect of league leaders London Lions.

He said: “I said at the start of the season that we had to win a trophy and we need to get over that hurdle.

“It has not been a great league campaign for us (the Rocks are currently 10th) so this is something where we can show that we are going in the right direction.”

Rocks defeated the Giants in both legs of the home and away semi finals, securing the tie with a 95-81 win on Sunday, which Gareth put down to strong defensive play.

He added: “It showed that we can play some defence, which we haven’t done this season.

“Willie Clayton is a monster rebounding the ball for Manchester, but we controlled him and that was big.”

The Rocks will face London in the final on January 27, a one-off tie on neutral ground in Birmingham.

Gareth said: “They’re a really good team and we know it will be tough, but it will be a one-off tie and we know we can do it.”
