Cambus are edged out by Annan

Losing streak continues

- JONATHAN GEDDES

ANNAN ............................................... 38 CAMBUSLANG ................................. 22 Cambuslang rugby captain Alec Bean has admitted the team’s morale has dipped after several defeats - and reckons it is vital they snap their losing run this Saturday against Kilmarnock.

Cambus put up a good fight against Annan last weekend, going down to a 3822 defeat, and Alec believes the local side are heading in the right direction again.

He said: “It’s been tough going for us lately.

“We had a run of games in a row against all the top teams, and up till Christmas we hadn’t had a weekend off since the season started.

“It took a toll on us and it was a bit demoralising recently. We‘ve had players missing, and against Allan Glen’s the other week we really struggled to get a team out.”

He’s hoping the club can return to winning ways at home on Saturday, when they welcome Kilmarnock to Coat’s Park.

He told the Reformer: “Kilmarnock is a game we have been targeting.

“We lost to them at their place in October 27-17 and it was a frustrating one, because scrums weren’t contested and that was an area that we had been doing well in.

“If we can control the scrum again and have a good platform then we can win.”

The captain also saw improvement in the performance against Annan, despite the defeat.

Coming a week after an embarrassing 98-0 loss to Allan Glens, Alec felt the Annan game was closer than the scoreline suggested.

He added: “We were down by nine and they scored on the very last play of the game, which made it look more comfortable than it was.

“We both scored four tries but we gave away some silly penalties, which we absolutely have to work on.

“Their kicker was very good and we had too much indiscipline, so they were able to keep kicking penalties.

“However we defended well a lot of the time, and there were some positives for us.”

The Cambuslang try scorers were Chad McGlame with a double, Dylan Cleave and Euan Jones.

The team are also offering a hospitality deal for Saturday’s fixture, offering soup and a sandwich beforehand plus a half time pie for £5.

Kick off is at 2pm.
