Two cyclists hit by cars

Motorists are being reminded to give cyclists plenty of space after a man was seriously injured in a collision on Monday.

A 57-year-old was hit by a car on Rutherglen Main Street, near to the junction with McCallum Avenue at 11am.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to cuts on both of his legs.

The 81-year-old driver of the car was uninjured.

Police taped off the area as officers from the traffic division examined the scene and enquiries are ongoing.

The incident came just three days after a cyclist was hit by a car on Cambuslang’s Westburn Drive.

The 40-year-old was hit by vehicle at 5.30pm on Friday but managed to maintain control of the bike and was uninjured.

Police are appealing for witnesses to both incidents and inspector Bob Bryce, of Rutherglen police office, said:“The message for cyclists and motorists to take care.

“The weather is getting better and there is an increased number of people cycling on our roads.

“We are asking drivers to be aware of cyclists and to give them space on the road. The highway code says to give cyclists the same as you would when overtaking a car.

“We also advise using the Dutch reach method – a way of opening a car door with the hand furthest from the handle, forcing drivers and passengers to check over their shoulders for approaching traffic.”

Inspector Bryce also reminded cyclists to always wear a helmet and high visibility clothing.

People who may have witnesses either of the cycling collisions are asked to contact police on telephone number 101.
