Clyde hoping for a final flourish in play-off

- COLIN PATERSON

Danny Lennon insisted the job is only half-finished after classy Clyde cruised into the League One play-off final.

Ecstatic Bully Wee fans chanted ‘We’re on our way back’as goals from Kristoffer Syvertsen, Ally Love and David Goodwillie set Clyde in the final of the promotion playoffs against Annan.

And boss Lennon admits the hard work has still to be done if they are to bring to an end almost a decade stuck in the bottom tier of the SPFL.

He said:“I’m absolutely thrilled and to see the players go out there and put our plan into action was very pleasing.

“It’s a real credit to these guys. They are a joy to work with and leave everything out there.

“The journey continues and we’re two very difficult games away. We will attempt to get the job done but Annan will be a hungry side.”

Kick-off was delayed for almost 10 minutes to allow the bumper crowd into Broadwood.

But it was Clyde’s fans who had plenty to cheer as they struck the first blow.

Already leading 10 from the first leg, Goodwillie broke forward and cut inside Craig Thomson before driving into the box and squaring for Syvertsen who bundled the ball home from a yard out.

It was a goal which gave Clyde breathing space and Goodwillie almost made it 2-0 in 23 minutes but his volley was well blocked by keeper Callum Antell.

The home side were dominant while City offered little threat and were desperately missing top goalscorer Blair Henderson through injury.

Syvertsen had a chance to double his tally but his low shot hit the post with Edinburgh’s overworked defence scrambling the ball to safety.

Goodwillie was presented with an opening two minutes later but lobbed wide with only Antell to beat.

However, the former Dundee United striker was at his creative best again three minutes into the second half when he played in Love who produced a cool finish.

And Goodwillie finally got on the scoresheet in 58 minutes when he headed a Mark Lamont free-kick into the corner of the net to wrap the tie up.

The first leg of the final took place last night, after the Reformer went to press, with the second leg tie on Saturday at Broadwood, kick off at 3pm.
