TODDLERS IN NURSERY ROAD DASH

Mum blasts staff saying tot could have been killed

- EDEL KENEALY

Two toddlers escaped injury after walking out of a nursery and into the path of a van on a Cambuslang road last week.

Devyn Dunlop and another child walked out of the garden gate of Three Bears Nursery on Hawthorn Walk and into the path of oncoming traffic just before 10am on Friday.

The pair were seen running on to the road by a van driver who pulled over and got them to safety.

The man, who has since spoken to Devyn’s mother, flagged down another driver to stay with the children as he went to the nursery, assuming the children had come from there.

“That’s when they were first aware that these kids were missing, it wasn’t a matter of seconds,” Devyn’s mother Sarah McCall told the Reformer.

“And not only was one child missing, but two.

“The kids could have been killed. I’m disgusted. Whoever was in charge of the children, these people should be sacked.”

Although the incident took

place at around 10am, Sarah was not notified until 11.40am, when she says she heard a much watered-down version of events.

Sarah was told that there had been an incident at the nursery involving Devyn and whilst she had managed to get out the toddlers’garden, she was never in any danger.

Sarah added:“I had got a phone call and was told a pack of lies that Devyn had not got out [of the grounds] and that the staff realised she was gone and got her before leaving the main gate. “We felt that was OK. “Me and John Paul, Devyn’s dad, said ‘well if you are going to do an inspection report, we want to see that and the risk assessments, etc’. “We were ready to put it to bed.” But later that evening Sarah was sent a link to a Facebook post which the sister of the van driver put on social media about an incident.

It stated that the children were alone and, crucially on the road. Sarah said:“I’m reading it thinking that’s not what I was told.

“I messaged the girl saying that’s my wee girl, can I speak to your brother. “My partner called him. “He told us that the wee boy shot across the road, he slammed on the brakes and my daughter ran in front of the van and fell. “He got out before he hit her.” She added:“They are all trying to cover for each other.

“Their jobs are replaceable, my daughter isn’t. Every single one of them is an absolute disgrace.

“They are lucky my daughter is still breathing.

“I don’t think any child is safe in their care.”

Sarah says that she has since reported the incident to the Care Inspectorate, the watchdog for nurseries, and the police.

The Reformer contacted Three Bears Nursery for a response.

The nursery was not willing to comment on the incident but said an investigation was taking place.
