It is Rutherglen’s biggest day of the year, and the programme of events for next month’s Landemer Day has now been revealed.

Taking centre stage on June 1 will be Stonelaw High pupil Niamh MaGee, who will be crowned Landemer Queen by well known local resident Geraldine Baird MBE at 11.30am.

This year’s event is a week earlier than normal, due to the Scotland game at Hampden the following Saturday.

Stonelaw pupils Keira Sutherland and Kayleigh Wither will join Niamh as her ladies in waiting, while Cathkin pupils Kacy Hunter and Kelsi Findlay, Rutherglen High girls Rebecca McBride and Rebecca Newall and Trinity youngsters Amy Morrison and Ella White will make up her ladies in waiting.

The group will be joined by the Queen’s champion from the ATC, and Dowager Queen Kaitlyn Crawford.

Following the ceremony, a flash mob from South Lanarkshire’s Leisure and Culture will take place, followed by a performance from the Cambuslang Parish Church pipe band, and a display from dance troupe Dance Elite, before the Queen and her court will be whisked off to enjoy lunch.

Entertainment will then continue on the main stage throughout the afternoon, including the Cambuslang and Rutherglen Rock and Pop Chorus, the Ukulele All Stars – who have been practicing regularly in the Town Hall – and country singer Robyn Taylor.

The music will continue with songs from vocalist Josh Graham, before songstress Rebekah Kirk wraps up the festivities.

As always, there will be plenty of stalls offering a variety of goods for visitors to peruse.

There are also a number of events taking place ahead of the big day, with Rutherglen library hosting several.

These include an ongoing treasure hunt competition, a Landemer Memories afternoon this Saturday (May 25) from 2pm until 4pm, and a 100 Years of Landemer display, which will look at how the event returned to the calendar in 1919 after the end of World War I.
