Walkers set blistering pace for Macmillan
A pair of Rutherglen charity workers have raised £1500 for Macmillan Cancer Support after hiking the equivalent of four marathons in just four days.
Wendy Russell and Taylor McKeown, who both work at R:evolve Recycle in Rutherglen, set off from Milngavie to tackle the West Highland Way.
They were in training for five months for the gruelling 96-mile hike from Milngaive to Fort William.
Initially, they set themselves a target of £800. And when they exceeded that, they boosted it to £1000.
Thanks to the support of generous donors, the pair were delighted to generate a total of £1500 for the cancer charity.
R:evolve sustainability manager Wendy said: “I have attempted the four days a couple of times, but was unable to finish it. I first attempted it at the age of 19 and I’m 39 now, so it has taken me 20 years!
“The weather was beautiful, and we only once had a wee passing shower. The highest it got was 18 degrees. Sometimes, I had to remind myself that I was still in Scotland!
“There were 30 of us. Everybody was lovely. We were keping each other going, passing round food and talking rubbish to strangers. Some people had some really dodgy music and that kept us going, too. Everybody had such a good laugh.”
Commenting on the generosity of those who helped boost the total raised to £1500, Wendy said: “I think because of the enormity of the challenge people put in a lot of money because they know they will never do it themselves. And it is such a wonderful charity.”
It’s the latest in a series of fundraisers organised for Macmillan by staff and volunteers at R:evolve, an organisation that aims to get people to think differently about their clothing, reduce consumption, landfill waste and our carbon footprint.
The funds raised by Wendy and Taylor’s trek means that in the past four years, the R:evolve team has raised an impressive £5500 for Macmillan.
