Police urge vigilance after four cars are stolen within a week

-

A number of cars have been stolen in Rutherglen and Cambuslang and an attempt made on a fourth in a spree of recent vehicle thefts.

Two cars were taken from a driveway in Central Avenue after thieves broke the lock on a downstairs window to gain entry to the house.

The intruders found the keys of the vehicles and made off with both during the early hours of last Friday.

A second theft, mirroring the first, saw a car stolen from outside a house on Viewpark Drive, Burnside.

Thieves again gained entry to the property via a ground floor window in the early hours of Monday morning. In a third incident, also in Central Avenue, at 3.20am yesterday (Tuesday), a householder awoke to find three men attempting to steal his car

The man had heard the sound of a window being opened and, having spooked the thieves, watched them race off in a small black car, possibly a BMW 1 series.

All three men were dressed in black and had their hoods up.

The thefts come less than a week after Rutherglen police reported a car had been stolen in King’s Park Avenue.

The black Volkswagen Golf was taken at 3am last Tuesday after thieves broke into the owner’s home. Inspector Bob Bryce of Rutherglen police office said house breaking is a priority for local officers, but continued to urge householders. to take extra care when securing their homes at night.

He told the Reformer:“In the last week there have been three house break-ins and for all of them the homes were targeted because the windows were ajar or open.

“The message we want to give people is before they go to bed, make sure all downstairs windows are shut and locked. Also make sure car keys are not visible or kept anywhere near the door or window.”

He added:“There is extra attention being paid to this type of crime by our night shift officers in these areas. Our officers are proactive, but we are asking the public to be vigilant and to contact us about any suspicious activity.”

In a separate incident, police arrested a man within the grounds of Cuningar Estates on Saturday who was allegedly intent on committing theft.

The 42-year-old was detected by police at 3.40am and held in police custody pending an appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday, Tuesday.

Anyone with information regarding the thefts is urged to contact police on 101. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
