Pub rules as Al Murray mania set to hit ‘Well

-

Celebrated comedian Al Murray brings his latest tour to Motherwell Concert Hall on Saturday.

The English comedian will be on stage as his famous “Pub Landlord” character on the Land of Hope and Glory tour which has been playing to packed out crowds across the UK.

A regular on the comedy circuit, Al ‘s upcoming date at Motherwell will mark his first live show there since the 2016 tour Let’s Go Backwards Together.

The English comedian and TV personality has been working the circuit since the early 90s.

His comedy has been described as a unique blend of satire, surrealism and observational comedy inspired by the world today.

As well as performing stand up he has obtained an eclectic list of TV credits over the years, including appearances on Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Hell’s Kitchen, Top Gear , Horrible Histories and numerous BBC panel shows. He has also written and featured in successful shows including Al Murray’s Happy Hour and The Pub Landlord.

The 2019 dates will mark his first live shows since the 2016 tour Let’s Go Backwards Together.

The tagline for the latest show reads: “Citizens of Hope and Glory! Our new tomorrow beckons. A new tomorrow that smells reassuringly of yesterday, but with Wi-Fi.”

Having started out by touring with comedians such as Harry Hill and Frank Skinner, Oxford graduate Murray won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1999, after being nominated in 1996, 1997 and 1998.

In 2003 he was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and in 2007, he was voted the 16th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups.

The Pub Landlord character first appeared on stage in 1994. Murray’s alter ego was the central focus of the television series Time Gentlemen Please, as well as a number of other television appearances.

Subsequent theatre tours were And A Glass of White Wine for the Lady and Giving it Both Barrels.

There were hints at Murray was tempted to retire his oldest gimmick after presenting the Great British Pub Quiz earlier this year.

He said: “I’ve done documentaries and presented the One Show as myself but I’ve not done anything as me that’s an entertainment thing. Figuring out what I’m like as a performer has been an interesting thing.”

However, Murray is back in his favourite guise in Motherwell at the weekend.

Al Murray, as the Pub Landlord, will be appearing at Motherwell Concert Hall on Saturday, June 1, at 7.30pm.

A limited number of tickets are still available, priced £28.50, and can be purchased by calling the box office on 01698 403120. Alternatively log onto the Culture NL website at www.culturenl.co.uk
