Durie’s girls on tour

Coach Archie delighted as women do club proud

-

Local Durie’s boxers were in the ring last weekend.

Two of the club’s fighters were on international duty for Scotland, with Stephanie Kernachan taking part in the three nation GBs in Edinburgh.

Coach Archie Durie said: “She boxed really well overall, being the better technical boxer, but the Welsh champion Helen Jones had some engine on her and was pressing forward and getting stronger as the three- minute rounds went on.

“She just generally wore her down and no complaints from Stephanie on the day,it just didn’t happen for her.”

While Stephanie was boxing in Edinburgh, Chloe Bodwick, a recent arrival at Durie’s, was in Romania in the Junior European championships.

Unfortunately she drew the favourite to win in the first round.

Archie added: “She gave it her all and was in no way disgraced, leaving nothing in the ring. She gave the Russian a real hard fight.

“But the shots from the Russian caught the judges’ eyes and the decision went to Russia, but what a performance Chloe put up.

“This whole trip will have her in good stead for a bright future in a Scotland vest.”

Closer to home two more female boxers were in action on Sunday at Glasgow City abc show, with Natalie Robertson and Sinead Price-Greene fighting.

Sinead came in at short notice to take part in a no- scoring exhibition with Sophie Paton ( Glasgow City abc), and with Sinead not being in the ring for about a year, this exhibition was probably ideal for her confidence.

Archie said: “She controlled the exhibition, being a good bit more experienced and put up a good show.”

Next up was Nat a l i e Robertson, who won her first fight in almost seven years, by a unanimous decision of 5-0.

Natalie gave her opponent Laura Fletcher ( Glasgow City abc) standing eight counts in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and kept calm when the home boxer rushed at her, using her longer jab followed by her back hand right on numerous occasions

Archie said: “It was good to have both our girls back in action as both had been out for a while. Sinead hasn’t fought in about a year so when offered this bout at short notice two days ago, we jumped at it and it went well.

“Natalie was back in the ring after several years out and boxed brilliantly to beat the home Glasgow City lass convincingly.

“She was using her boxing skills and nice long straight punching. I was delighted by her performance.”

Durie’s have a home show on June 14, when all of the club’s boxers will be in action.

There are still tickets on sale from Archie on 077341 75338.
