Outrage as fly-tippers block road

-

JONATHAN GEDDES

Foolish fly-tippers blocked off a Cambuslang road last week after dumping a load of rubbish on it.

Shocked motorist Simon Hollinghurst snapped this image after driving along Manse Brae, between Westburn Road and Hallside Road.

He then had to reverse and take a different route through Cambuslang, and feared it was “an accident waiting to happen.”

Simon told the Reformer: “I had to reverse back a long stretch until I got to a space to turn, as the road is single track. It was about a 20-point turn though.

“I was worried about someone coming up from behind but had no choice.

“Whoever did it is an idiot. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

Mr Hollinghurst reported the issue to South Lanarkshire Council, who cleared the road of the debris the following day.

The image provoked an angry reaction on social media.

One poster wrote: “What is wrong with people? Do they think their rubbish belongs to others? They just dump it where they think no-one will notice.”

Another added: “It shows the absolute disregard they have. Utter disrespect for every decent person in this area. Surely the council must act to catch the perpetrators now.”

The Reformer reported earlier this year on fly-tipping problems in Cambuslang, with the likes of Gilbertfield Road plagued by issues.

Cambuslang East councillor Katy Loudon hit out: “I’ve been contacted by a number of constituents, about several fly-tipping incidents on Manse Brae, and I share their frustration.

“The vast majority of people have been patient and understanding about the changes to waste and recycling services during the Covid crisis, made to protect staff and the public’s health, and I am not surprised that many residents are angry about the selfish behaviour of a few.

“The Eastfield centre is now accepting larger items like soft furnishings, mattresses, flooring and large white goods again, and there’s no excuse for it.

“Council teams have had to clear up this area several times now, and while I commend their quick response and hard work, this situation can’t continue.

“I’ve been in touch with Environmental Services about what can be done going forward to prevent any further incidents.”

If anyone has specific information on those that are causing fly tipping then South Lanarkshire Council’s team can be reached on 0303 123 1015 or by visiting www. southlanarkshire.gov.uk and going to the Report Fly Tipping section.
