Video raises a laugh in lockdown... and £500

- JONATHAN GEDDES

A group of kind teenagers have put their time during lockdown to good use – by raising funds for the local foodbank.

Youngsters involved with the youth, family and community learning service have been trying to keep busy during the coronavirus pandemic, and have been thinking up ideas that will help them stay creative.

They decided to film a video called Lockdown Laughs last month that was aimed at helping keep people’s spirits up, and they hit on the idea of supporting the Cambuslang and Rutherglen foodbank in the process.

The group’s co-ordinator Brian McLeod explained: “With all the facilities closed we’ve still been engaging with them online through some activities.

“One of those ideas was to come up with videos to put on the likes of TikTok and from there the idea then came to try and use some of their activities to raise money for food banks.

“The teenagers came up with the idea for a montage, developed the script and ideas. After that they put out a call for anyone else to get involved and other videos came in.”

The video features members of the group, based at Universal

Connections in Cambuslang, trying dance routines, playing football, cracking jokes and having a good time despite the lockdown.

Several staff members joined in the fun and got involved in the video too, while a message asks anybody who enjoyed the video to donate to a fundraising page for the foodbank. So far the video has raised more than £500.

Brian added: “The money just seemed to go up and up and they were amazed at how well it did.

“Social media videos are usually done just for the kids’ pleasure but this has been able to benefit a lot of others. They were out of their comfort zone with some of the ideas and the editing process but really did well.”

Cambuslang and Rutherglen foodbank’s Ian Robertson said: “It’s great to see them getting involved like this and we will be grateful for the donation.”

The foodbank is currently closed with food donations being handled by the Camglen Covid group, but organisers hope to reopen soon as lockdown restrictions continue to be eased.
