Pitch poo anger

Rugby club appeal to dog walkers

- JONATHAN GEDDES

A local rugby club have been facing a trying time since their junior teams returned to action – as dog walkers keep letting their pets foul on the field.

Now members of Cambuslang Rugby Club want to send the repeat offenders to the sin bin.

With lockdown easing, the majority of the club’s age groups have been able to resume regular training, getting much needed exercise in.

However club coaches have been left disgusted at the amount of dog dirt being left on their grounds, at Langlea Road.

Colin Swanson, the head of the junior section at the club, said: “We started back with a form of training last week and we knew it would be a problem because we’ve not been there for a bit.

“We arranged a scheduled clean-up and it was really disgusting – by the end of it we had two massive bin bags filled with nothing but dog poo.

“There were buckets and bins at the ground as well, and people have been throwing it in there, so it was absolutely pouring over there too.

“Even now the kids are back we are still having problems where dog walkers are using the ground, and at the end of the day they’re rugby pitches, not a local park.

“We just want the dog walkers to take a bit of responsibility and if they really feel they have to come across this way, at least tidy up as they go along. Sometimes they won’t even have a lead on, and you’ll get dogs running on the pitch where the kids are. So we’re looking for a bit more care from the owners.”

Colin added that the mess wasn’t fair on the kids or the volunteers left to clear it up.

“From a health perspective it is vital that we try to minimise and cut out dog faeces on the pitches and across the sports facility.

“It’s disgusting and not fair on our children and not fair on the ones who have to clean it up. “

In brighter news for club officials, they are delighted to see their youth teams resuming training.

Colin said: “The kids are thrilled to get back, and be running about again.

“We’ve had various things with Zoom but it’s obviously not the same.

“It was great to see the parents back too. There’s one per child and just having a bit of camaraderie with them all is good to see.”
