Clean crew combat local litter louts

Residents hit out at mindless minority spoiling park

- Jonathan Geddes

Castlemilk residents have hit out at the lockdown litterbugs who they say are ruining their local park.

Magda Lo Bianco and her friends have been so disgusted at the amount of debris being dumped in Castlemilk Park that they have started organising weekly clean-ups in the green space to tidy it.

However, the mess has continued to accumulate and Magda has appealed for the mindless litter louts to think about what they are doing.

She told the Reformer : “The area at the park is beautiful and green, but there’s rubbish there all the time.

“It’s really depressing to see what’s been happening in a lovely space. There’s also deer, foxes and other animals all living throughout and it’s quite sad to see the amount of things dumped there, because there’ll be a knock-on effect on the animals living there too.

“It’s not even children being careless, because most of the things we have found would belong to adults. There have been things there that have been there for ages, like car parts and shoes as well as bottles and food packaging.

“How you can be proud of your city and then do that? It’s frustrating to see it.”

This led Magda, who runs her own cake making business, to start asking if anyone wanted to help tidy up the park on Sundays.

Now, every week, a handful of locals now meet up – socially distanced of course – to tackle different areas of the park, collecting in the rubbish.

Cassiltoun Housing Association have provided the group with cleaning gear to help tackle the problem.

Magda explained: “It’s just over the past couple of months that we get together.

“My friend Beata and I started doing it with our kids. Every Sunday we’d get at least 10 bags of rubbish from just around and at least you feel like you’re doing something to help.

“There’s more people joining so hopefully we can get somewhere. In the long run there needs more education so children know they shouldn’t be doing this and being lazy by dropping things. In the short term it would be good to get more bins inside of the park, so there’s more places people can use to put things in.”
