From Cambuslang to Australia, Cairns kids rose to the challenge

- JONATHAN GEDDES

Cambuslang kids managed to fit plenty of exercise into their Easter break.

Youngsters at Cairns Primary were challenged to get out and about in the area in a bid to keep themselves active.

The school’s parent council asked pupils, along with teachers, staff and family members, to try and walk a combined 9315 miles – the distance between Cairns Primary and the city of Cairns in Queensland, Australia.

The youngsters rose to the challenge by getting active in all sorts of ways, and some of them even tried their hand at fundraising too, with an extra £1200 being raised for the parent council, which will help to support them and the school.

Parent council member Simon Colligan told the Reformer: “It’s been hard for the parent council with the pandemic, because most of the usual fund raising things like Christmas fairs, summer fetes etc can’t go ahead.

“So there was some talk about things that we could do, and I’ve done a few things like this at work, so suggested it for the kids as it’s something that can be easily done with social distancing and within the current guidelines.

“Although it’s raised some money for the parent council, we wanted the key thing to be getting the kids out of the house and having some exercise.

“It could be done any way they liked, so walking, running, cycling, even skateboarding all counted!

“I think what helped is that we have various Facebook pages on the go, so everyone was sharing pictures of themselves out and about and getting involved.

“That then encouraged the other kids to want to try and do something too.”

The parent council had hoped to earn around £1000 but the total currently sits at £1220.
