Gillespie and Spiders on cusp of title

-

Queen’s Park are a point away from sealing the League Two title, but midfielder Grant Gillespie says they’re taking nothing for granted.

Ray McKinnon’s side moved 15 points clear of second-placed Edinburgh City with a 3-2 win in the capital on Saturday.

Peter Grant opened the scoring for the Spiders, Liam Henderson levelled and Josh Campbell put City 2-1 in front, but a Simon Murray double the points.

Queen’s Park hosted Elgin City at the Falkirk Stadium as the Reformer went to press and a draw will be enough to see them crowned as champions.

Gillespie’s side have barely dropped any points this season, with 15 wins and two draws from 17 games, but he says it isn’t over until it’s over.

He said:“It was a great result on Saturday. At this time of the season it’s all about winning games, it doesn’t really matter how you play, and it was important to get the three points.

“Everybody says it, it’s not over until it’s over, and we’ve got another massive game against Elgin, and hopefully we can go on and win it in style.”

Gillespie says being full-time had helped, but is no guarantee to success, having had a similar experience with Raith in 2018-19 that didn’t go so well.

“To win a league you need experience and we have good experienced pros and also good young players around us, so it’s a good mix, a good blend,”he said.

“But I went to Raith Rovers, we were the only full-time team in that league and it didn’t go to plan, so you can never guarantee to be challenging for league titles and be up there in the business end of the season.”
