Recruitment is key for Glasgow Rocks next season, as they lick their wounds in the British Basketball League.

A last-gasp 85-83 defeat to Newcastle Eagles on Sunday has left the city side staring at bottom spot in the British Basketball League, as they head into clashes with at Cheshire Phoenix on Thursday, Leicester Riders on Friday and at home to London Lions on Sunday.

Rocks will be fine with no relegation, but Rutherglen player/coach Gareth Murray says it’s important that they learn from what has been a really tough season, for a number of reasons.

He said:“It has been a really tough season.

“We’ve had plenty of games this month; six so far with three to go, and obviously this season is not how we wanted it to be, in terms of where we are, but thankfully we’ll be here again next year.

“In the last two weeks or so, the guys have played really well in terms of how I want them to play basketball, they’ve just been really unlucky.”

Murray added that having time to focus on their recruitment in the off-season will be vital for the Rocks.

He said:“Recruiting for next year is now the main focus and it takes a lot of work because you’re almost building a whole new team again.

“Guys want to move on and do different things, there are new players to look at, and it’s a tough process that you have to do every summer. But this will be my first summer where I actually have everything in place.

“Last summer we were scrambling everything together, we didn’t know if we were playing basketball this year or not, could people travel, and with a lot of uncertainty. Everything will be in place, the key will be recruitment and it’s a focus already so I’m taking that very seriously, because I don’t want to be in the same position we are this year.”
