HARVEY: TIME FOR GLENSTO KICK ON

Boss says rivals will take note after back-to-back wins

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey says those who wrote his side off might need to look over their shoulder as they make their way up the West of Scotland League First Division.

Glencairn’s 1-0 win at Neilston on Saturday moved them up three places to 10th in the table, one point behind Bonnyton Thistle, but with FIVE games in hand. Weather-permitting, they now host St Roch’s tonight (Wednesday) and Johnstone Burgh on Saturday, with the prospect that back-to-back wins could move them up to fourth spot.

Harvey said: “We have games in hand over a couple of the teams above us, and the hope is that if we win those it can move us right up the table.

“We’re still taking it one game at a time, but we knew we had to get on a run and we knew we were capable of it.

“It’s only two wins in the league but the more games we can get played in the league and keep it going, the better.

“We’re due to play on Wednesday, and if we win we could end up about fifth in the league, and then all of a sudden people are turning round and saying ‘where did they come from’.

“A lot of people have written us off, but we didn’t. We’ll keep plugging away, because we’ve still got St Cadoc’s to play, Benburb to play twice, and a few others up there.

“We’re well capable of mixing it up. “We’ve had a bad session at the start of the season, and other people will drop points, but it’s up to us to pick up as many as we can now and see where that takes us.”

Harvey added: “That win jumped us up about three positions on Saturday and we’re looking a wee bit healthier.

“We’re starting to go away from the relegation zone and that was our main target, first and foremost.

“As I keep saying to the players, just concern yourselves with the next team above you, look to leap-frog them and then look to the next one – don’t be looking any higher.”

Harvey hopes they can get games on this week and consolidate themselves in a much higher position.

“It’s depending on the weather, but fingers crossed – we played Renfrew a few weeks ago and then had another two that didn’t go ahead.

“It’s supposed to be freezing but the last thing we want is for it to be stopstart, because that seems to hurt us.

“If we can get two wins that puts us on 24 points, which takes you up into the top four.

“People who have stopped worrying about us will have to watch us.”
