GLENS FACING FAMILIAR FACE

Harvey relishing battle with protégé Fraser

- PAUL THOMSON

Willie Harvey hopes he still has a few tricks up his sleeve to outwit his protégé and Glens legend Tony Fraser when they clash on Saturday.

The Rutherglen Glencairn gaffer takes his side to Cumbernauld United knowing Fraser – who left the club to take the reins at United in April 2021 – stands between his side and a precious three points in the West of Scotland First Division.

The pair couldn’t be separated the last time the sides met in November’s 1-1 draw at the Hamish B Allan Stadium and

Harvey said: “I’m looking forward to meeting up with Tony again, one of our ex-coaches and player.

“The games between us always seem to end up being quite tight and end in a draw.

“But I’ve had too many draws this season so I’m hoping it isn’t another draw against him – I want a win for change.

“Tony has been away for a couple of years now but his teams always play football and they are fit. He’s a very good coach and he has taken that into management.

“I always know we’ll get a game of football and it will be a good game.

“I’d like to think he’s taken some experience off of me having been around here for a wee while, but hopefully I’ve still got some tricks up my sleeve that he hasn’t learned yet.”

Before that, Glens are due to host St Roch’s on league business tonight and that comes after Saturday’s home clash with Johnstone Burgh was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Harvey, whose side remain 10th in the table, added: “The St Roch’s game was already postponed last midweek so hopefully we get it on this time.

“A good result could move us up another couple of places in the league.

“With games in hand we could end up fourth and we’ve still got the likes of St Cadoc’s to play, Benburb twice, so there is a lot of football to play that can get us back in the hunt.

“I’ve said to the players to keep focusing on what’s above us and take it one game at a time.”

Meanwhile, Harvey says recent signings Ross Smith, Matty Grier and Dom McLaughlin are all settling in well.

He added: “Ross has been out for a wee while but once he gets his fitness back, he will be fine.

“Big Dom is an outstanding prospect for us and wee Matty Grier is still learning. He is probably going to be a bigger player for us next year, but he gives us a bit of class in the team.”
