Onwards and upwards for Durie’s as new gym opens

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says he’s remaining positive about his new gym, despite cutting his space by 50 per cent.

Durie’s Boxing Gym have moved to Blairbeth after a dispute with landlords and Durie says he just wants to draw a line under the whole thing.

But he says it’s onwards and upwards for the club and he will continue to operate as normal, with boxers entering various events over the next few weeks.

Durie said:“We’ve put it behind us and we move on.

“I was gutted about the way it happened and all the rest of it, and in another situation maybe we could remain friends, but it’s the way it is.

“I wished him the best of luck in future and shook his hand.

“It’s a new beginning for us, we’re right in the middle of Blairbeth, and it’s busy and starting to work well already.

“It’s onwards and upwards for us – things are going good, for a change!”

Durie added:“I’m delighted with the new unit. It’s more homely. It’s smaller, it’s half the size of the unit on Cambuslang Road, but I can see it being busier. It’s going well.”

One of the first successes for the club from Blairbeth was when Castlemilk’s Lucas Ewan won the 2009 56kg title at the Scottish Intermediate Championships at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell on Saturday.

The 13-year-old beat Drew Campbell from Springhill ABC on a 3/2 split decision.

And a proud Durie said:“Lucas is flying high just now.

“He is really turning into a top boy in the boxing world.

“He’s going places for sure, winning his second Scottish title.”
