STRANGE OBSESSIONS

-

Alth hough Supertune’s origins are in 197 70s racing, Gary and Troy’s partnership is based b on far more esoteric interests. “I became b obsessed with electric start Lam mbrettas after seeing the Scoot RS pro totype,” Gary explained. “Other than the complete scooter at Buzzsolomoto, I th ink I’ve managed to trace most of the surviving parts from the Servetta pro ject. After speaking to a friend who was s about to give up riding when he cou uld no longer kick over his Lambretta I th ought there could be a market for the electric start. While researching its potential I was told about this guy called Troy in Preston who shared my obsession. The result is our electric start kit.”

Unlike the Spanish prototypes Supertune’s battery and electronics are contained in a ‘basket’ near the rear wheel. These allow a long range tank or standard toolbox to be fitted but it’s Troy’s ignition switch that’s truly innovative. “Most two wheelers use a key to create the circuit and a starter button to start the engine,” said Troy, “By careful design I’ve created car-style key starting in a standard Lambretta ignition switch.”

The conversion retails at £1250 and although a DIY kit is planned, the first batch will be fitted by Troy in Preston, ensuring any problems are ironed out.

“Electric start won’t cure any underlying problems,” said Troy “but it brings Lambretta into the 21st century.” The kit will fit any standard Lambretta casing and a specific solution for the Targa Twin is already in advanced stages of development.
