Low Fell SC completed their annual Easter egg charity ride-out and in the process spread a lot of happiness…

Low Fell Scooter Club ‘egg-ceed’their ‘egg-spectations!’

This years’ Easter egg ride-out on Sunday, March 25, saw an unprecedented element of support from local businesses and the scootering fraternity throughout Gateshead, South Tyneside, Durham and Newcastle. The target of number of Easter eggs Low Fell wanted to achieve to donate to the Queen Elizabeth Children’s Hospital, Gateshead, was 500 but the final figure collected was over 1300 – more than could be carried!

Organisation

The ride-out day started at approximately 10am with the Newcastle side of the water contingency of scooter riders setting off to the Children’s North East Charity and the St Oswald’s Hospice. In the meantime, at The Schooner (Low Fell SC’s HQ) preparations were being made for the main element of the ride-out, which would commence at 1pm to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

As the scooters (and a couple of bikers) gathered at The Schooner, supportive landlord Adrian Marley laid on refreshments for all, and a short time later the scooter riders from the Newcastle side of the water joined the main ride-out team. With all 33 riders formed up, the group set off to complete the 15 minute ride to the hospital. The day was blessed with clear sunshine and members of the public lined parts of the route, waving and cheering as the ride-out group passed. Attracting special attention were the riders in fancy dress outfits.

Arrival

Having arrived that the hospital, the scooters were then lined up in a prearranged area and the many eggs were formally donated. The staff and the young patients at the hospital were ‘egg-static’ with the response and the scooters themselves also proved to be a great attraction for the children.

With 400 eggs donated, Matron Emma Newton and her staff expressed their thanks and the riders and children parted company. The ride-out group then moved on to complete the final part of the day riding to the Angel of the North, which is the symbol of the North East and Low Fell; and with a few photo opportunities completed the afternoon closed with a debrief at The Schooner.

Sharing

At the close of the day there were still over 900 Easter-eggs to donate, and continuing to share ‘the chocolate love’ Low Fell SC donated the remaining eggs to local nursing and residential homes, social housing charities promoting independent living, and the local food bank. The residents loved seeing all the scooters and had lots of questions for the riders.

Memorial

On June 10, Low Fell SC will be completing another emotive event when they ride in memory of local girl Courtney Boyle, who sadly lost her life in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack. The Club is hopeful that all the North East Clubs will join them to pay their respects. Contact Christine Spencer at the Club for further information.
