Scootering

Russ Machin brings us the latest news in the official VCB newsfeed.

Here’s this month’s news update and club focus from the VCB’s very own Russ Machin...

Another month on and a few more rallies under my belt, including The Prodigy Rally in Wrexham, Cleethorpes and Strictly Scooters. However, from a VCB committee point of view, the last big event was VWD in Belfast which was a huge success. We’re using this as a foundation to build on for future events, especially BVD in Llangollen next August. We still have The Cheshire 100 and the Two Channels Dash to look forward to this year, along with the AGM and social evening in November.

The VCB has undergone many changes since its formation in 1952 and is constantly looking at new ideas to move forward into the 21st century. Recently, members set up a branch for riders with disabilities; to work alongside them we have appointed a committee member to promote equality and diversity within the club. Any ideas from members are always welcomed by the committee.

As the last couple of months have focused on riding events, I’ll move back to a VCB branch profile. Being their 40th anniversary, this month’s offering comes from Sarge at The Oxford Roadrunners: “Formed in 1978, 2018 sees us celebrating our 40th anniversary. Open to all makes and all variants of riding, Oxford Road Runners were at their peak during the 1980s/90s. Members attended National rallies (from ’79-present), also Euro Vespa and Euro Lambretta rallies. ORRSC held many weekends involving scooter sport events, trials, rough rides, road trials and gymkhanas for solo and pillion riders. Several weekends had a scooter version of popular TV programme Kickstart! We were affiliated to many clubs and national organisations, giving members chance to partake in available championships.

“We were an active VCB Branch (Cog 27). Members of the club won many VCB individual and club competitions. Club members were selected to represent VCB at Euro Vespa scooter events in Germany and Switzerland. During this time, we competed in various Federation of British Scooter Clubs championships, road racing, sprinting and grass track racing on Vespas and Lambrettas. Alongside scooter weekends we also promoted/co-promoted custom shows and grass track meetings. We returned to the VCB a few years ago but the original cog number had been reallocated, so now the club is Cog 15.

“We meet at 8pm on Tuesday evenings at the Boundary House, Abingdon during the winter. Summer meetings are at a different location each week, 2018 meetings have been dubbed ‘Taste the Smoke Tour’. Prospective new members and visiting clubs welcome. On September 8, ORRSC are holding their 40th anniversary celebration at Oxford Rugby Club, admission is FREE! See www. facebook.com/groups/198445935646 for further information.”
