IoW Lambretta Day 20th Anniversary

- Steve Robson

The weekend finished up at the Balcony Bars with headline act of the weekend Secret Affair and young band Subculture providing a fantastic finish to a cracking weekend.

This was easily the biggest ever Lambretta Day yet, with nearly 500 scooters on the Sunday. It started out with a meet-up and music on the Saturday, great scooters and fantastic atmosphere, some top DJs and bands, such as Ska’d for Life and Subculture. A great night followed at The Balcony Bars with Who’s Who and The Jam’d, both playing amazing sets.

Come Sunday morning, scooters and riders started meeting up at The Riverside from 11am and it was soon evident that it was going to be a big turn-out as the scooters poured in from around the country. The ride-out had a surprise guest, actor Shane Richie, who was on the island filming a TV show. It turns out Shane was a fan of the early 80s mod revival bands and after a chance meeting with Lambretta Day organiser Steve Robson, Steve pursuaded him to join in the day, arranging the loan of a Lambretta.

Shane then presented the Best Scooters of the Day trophies at Ryde Pavilion, and he had a good look round some of the custom scooters and chatted to owners. Shane’s time at Lambretta Day was filmed and will be included in the TV show which will be screened on Channel 5 in mid September.

We should like to thank our judges Reg Guster and Steve Gladdis, DJ Al Henchman and all the DJs and bands who played the weekend. Thanks also to our main sponsor Wightlink Ferries. They get a lot of stick, but on this event they do deserve some praise as without them supporting our bands’ travel we would not be able run the event as we do, so thank you.

Thanks again to all the great people that came along and enjoyed themselves, as you really are the people who make it such a success! Hope to see you all on August Bank Holiday at the Pavilion/Balcony Bars and Lambretta Day 2020.
