Anthony Meynell and Squire

September Gurls (Expanded version) Hi-Lo CD album

-

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the 79 mod revival. Squire, fronted by Anthony Meynell, were right at the vanguard of the 79 revival, along with labelmates Secret Affair. As part of the celebrations of that particular landmark, Secret Affair have been on their Glory Boys 40th Anniversary Tour throughout April and May, with special guests Squire. Originally released as a mini album in 1984, as the following long player to Get Smart, September Gurls featured, at the time unknown songs from Big Star, The Shoes and The Clones, alongside a few Anthony Meynell penned originals. Thirty-five years on from its original release, September Gurls has been both remastered as well as extended, with the addition of five extra tracks, which were also recorded during the original September Gurls sessions. Needless to say, all five ‘new’ numbers sit alongside the original tracks on September Gurls perfectly. Anthony was a genius songwriter during the heyday of the revival years. Merry Go Round For Two, Feel So Tired, The Reasons Why, All For Nothing and Circular Motion, although cut in 84 as demos, were live in the studio cuts, and all have elements of Squire’s Sunshine pop meets Brit-beat with hints of California paisley pop, which Anthony would fully embrace a year or so later. This is power pop par excellence, as well as a musical snapshot of one of the main driving forces of the class of 79’s raw quality, at its peak. September Gurls is also available in vinyl format, with the option of either red or black vinyl.
