Scootering

A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN…

-

When I was elected chairman at the 2019 AGM none of us had any idea the year was going to turn out as it has; at that point Covid-19 was a Chinese problem and far from a worry. So we entered this season to have our traditional March practice at Mallory cancelled with only a few days’ notice, swiftly followed by the rest of the BHR year’s fixtures. The decision was taken to see what events we could get and, having talked to members, the committee decided not to hold a championship, but individual cup rounds. Step up Andy Barnes… with an offer of racing at one of his Time Attack meetings, an offer we took up with gratitude and no little panic; normally our races are hosted and the official side of things organised by the hosts – this meeting was down to us. Stephen Hamilton, our new general secretary, stepped up and with some help from Chris Geyton and the rest of the committee got permits, technical staff, ACU blessing and all the other stuff that’s needed done, with a couple of days to go.

Following Cadwell we were offered Croft, hosted by our friends at the North East Motorcycle Club, so pretty much all we had to do was turn up and race, which was nice! Last meeting of the season was a late-in the-year Lord of Lydden – a low turnout due to timing and various local lockdown restrictions around the country, but what a meeting! Possibly some of the best scooter racing ever seen.

I’ve not described the actual racing above – Paul does a brilliant job in this magazine and I hope many of you will have seen the reports and live feeds from our Facebook page – ably run by Graham Tatton. What I will say is, despite the difficulties and the restrictions, we have had some proper racing but more importantly still, we have seen our racing family – and there is no finer: parts, tools, help, fuel, advice, food and indeed whole scooters, freely lent with no agenda other than to see your friends have fun. There are those that should be mentioned, the committee, Carole Allison, our team of technical inspectors, the NEMCRC team, the Lord of Lydden team, Andy and Time Attack , our meeting sponsors (Chiselspeed, DSC, Cornwall Scooter Centre) Darren Scott and the Lambretta Club of Great Britain. Thanks all. If this can be achieved by an all-new committee in these circumstances, just watch out for next year!

Best regards

Dave Bristow – chairman, BSSO
