BGM Pro line
At last, some good news for once, in relation to classic two-stroke motors anyway!
As the percentage of ethanol increases within the fuel sold on the garage forecourts in the UK and Europe, so the heightened risk to older motors increases significantly. It’s common knowledge that this increase can be detrimental to the seals within the motor. The failure of such a small and relatively inexpensive internal component can be seriously catastrophic, very expensive and extremely dangerous if it happens at the wrong time (say, while you’re giving your motor some serious stick on a fast and busy road).
But, as they say, necessity is the mother of invention and as there are serious numbers of classic Vespa and Lambretta scooters out there which we still want to ride for as long as we can, someone was bound to take up the challenge.
ETHANOL-RESISTANT OIL SEALS
The Scooter Center in Cologne, Germany has been looking into this and has recently unveiled its latest product from its everincreasing BGM Pro line of quality items. It is now supplying the new oil seals made of Viton® by Dupont® which is claimed to be resistant to increased ethanol percentages and more resilient to temperature.
The Scooter Center states: “The material FKM (fluorocarbon rubber) is extremely resistant to heat, friction and fuel/ethanol. Current super fuel in Germany already contains up to 5% ethanol per se; in other countries, the ethanol/alcohol content is significantly higher. Conventional shaft seals can swell or soften on contact with fuels containing ethanol. The BGM Pro FKM/Viton® rotary shaft seals offer perfect protection against this. In addition, Viton is twice as temperature resistant as conventional (blue) NBR shaft seals, has very good gas impermeability and is also very resistant to ageing.”
These seals are available for both classic Vespa and Lambretta motors and should be a prerequisite for anyone building a new motor.
RETRO OIL CANS
Here’s another new product to come from the BGM brand – well, when I say new product, I really mean new container, as the modern BGM brand has gone all retro with its new ‘Oldie Edition’ vintage tin can for its top quality two-stroke racing oil.
This will be a great purchase for many of the owners of scooters with BGM-powered motors who want to display their brand loyalty.
The oil can fits nicely into many of the retro holders designed to carry a one-litre container which are available from several different manufacturers.
