The Charms

– The Red Sessions (1992-1993) – Kanteen Records (12” Vinyl LP)

-

Hailing from Kent, The Charms were a product of the musically productive Medway area during the 90s. Many bands from that part of the South East consisted of musicians who featured in several different acts, cross-pollinating, evolving almost incestuously. The Charms consisted of members of both Newsflash and Three O Clock; several years after The Charms had run their course, they evolved into Jel. During '92 and '93 The Charms recorded a series of demo tracks in the acclaimed Medwaylocated Red Studios, the result of which was a demo cassette tape which gave a real taste of The Charms' repertoire. During The Charms' early 90s existence they built a sizeable fan base, including many from the scooter scene. Given that The Charms' influences, which shine through on the nine demo tracks, include The Jam, The Kinks, Beach Boys, The Who as well as a touch of early Blur, it's unsurprising that their following included many from the scooter riding fraternity. At last, 28 years after it was recorded, The Charms' The Red Sessions gets a release on a limited edition, (red) vinyl, long-player. Standout tracks for me are the upbeat, uplifting power-pop I Think You Ought To Know (The Way I Feel) and She Don't Tell Lies, also the contrastingly, emotive My Weekend, along with America, which is where a distinct nod to The Who is evident. All in all The Red Sessions gives a flavour of early 90s power-pop, Medway style, as well as a retrospective insight of what The Charms were about and why they were held in high esteem in their Kent base and beyond. This album release is currently available, mail order, exclusively via The Charms, though don't hang about, as it's a limited release. Email the band for full details, thecharms@btinternet.com and tell them Scootering sent you.
