Crash, bang, wallop! The good news and the bad news...

-

If you haven’t heard, my journey home from Whitby National Scooter Rally was eventful after I ended up being hospitalised by a motorist turning across my path, catapulting me on to his roof, then driving on until challenged by a member of the public – at which point, he braked and shot me off the roof and down the road like a torpedo.

The good news (if you can call it that) is that after spending a Saturday night under observation in a Lincolnshire hospital A&E department having various X-rays and a CT scan, the doctors gave me a pair of crutches and kicked me out, amazed that I’d survived the crash without major injuries.

The bad news is that the Vespa I was riding was a total write-off, although by the time I’d arrived home from hospital, I’d received a message from the driver’s insurance company admitting full liability.

And as with many things in life, this episode also came with a sting in the tail when I later received a letter from Lincolnshire Police stating that they weren’t going to prosecute the car driver - which I found rather surprising given their recent road safety campaign highlighting the vulnerability on the road of certain riding groups like cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists. This situation has left me wondering what sort of mixed message this gives out to the general public?

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who expressed their concern and sent me messages in various forms (there were so many that it would be impossible for me to thank and reply to everyone individually). I will be back on the road at some point, although I’m not sure exactly when...
