CUSTOM SHOW
Although most of the scooters on display were familiar to many rallygoers, that shouldn’t be taken as any negative comment about the quality of machines on display. It’s been a while since I’ve seen O’ Fortuna and frankly I’d forgotten just how stunning it is. No wonder it took the Punters’ Choice trophy. Continuing its dominance of the trophy board was Breaking Rocks; despite its success this is a scooter I can never get bored of studying. Anyone who thinks it’s getting too much attention only needs to look at the quality of murals on the legshields. It’ll take a very special machine to end this particular scooter’s run of success. At the other end of the scale, and my own personal favourite, was the Vespa 50 Special owned by 16-year-old George Bates. Not only was this smallframe beautifully restored, it was accessorised in a way that most of us aspired to in the early 1980s. It brought back many happy memories and left a huge smile on my face. To those who won trophies, well done, and to those who didn’t, thanks for sharing your pride and joy with us all.
