New MAG offer helps to protect London scooter riders from the expanding ULEZ charge

-

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has announced a new offer to help protect riders facing the expanding ULEZ charge in the form of a ‘riskfree’ method to check if their older scooter or motorcycle is compliant with the ULEZ’s requirement. MAG urges riders not to scrap serviceable bikes without first checking whether they are compliant.

Having fiercely opposed the ULEZ charge for motorcycles from the day it was first suggested, MAG went on to prove that the majority of preEuro 3 two-wheeled vehicles are compliant with the emissions standard that would exempt them from the ULEZ charge. London Mayor Sadiq Khan relented and agreed to a system to allow individual vehicles to be registered as exempt if they meet the standard. Many riders have since proven that their preEuro 3 machine is compliant and registered them as exempt from the charge. The test costs £175 with a £75 re-test fee and much like an MoT, delivers a straight pass or fail result.

While the majority of machines pass the test, the prospect of paying £175 has deterred many riders from registering their vehicles and this is where the MAG offer comes into play. By working with The Test Centre situated close to Greenwich in South London, MAG is able to offer a ‘no pass, no fee’ offer to all MAG members. The £175 fee will only be chargeable if the bike passes, and there will be no re-test charge should a little work be needed to get the bike through.

Director of The Test Centre, Ian Wills, said: “Well maintained, properly set-up and cared-for bikes stand a much better chance of meeting the standard and passing the test. If a bike passes the test, we upload the results straight to the TfL database and your bike is registered by TfL as exempt the next working day. We are finding most bikes are passing without any work.”

If you’re not already a member of MAG, a year’s single membership costs £30, not only giving you access to this and other offers but also enabling MAG’s campaigns to protect riders’ rights. www.mag-uk.org
