Clutch slip is now hiss-tory…

-

AF Rayspeed has done it again and launched yet another product to tantalise the Lambretta tuning masses… the AF Python Clutch. The kit comes supplied with a GP top bearing fitted, a thin clutch nut, and bevel washer, an Li top for the bearing, an end plate circlip, a set of wide clutch shims, and a clutch holding tool. Quite a comprehensive little package!

In their accompanying instruction sheet, AF explain that you do not need to take the unit apart to fit the clutch, that you do not need to ‘soak’ the clutch plates, and that you must use a wider clutch shim (as supplied with the clutch).

This clutch builds upon the design of the popular 6-plate AF Road clutch and shares the advantages of simple fitment and removal; as well as the top bearing, the clutch top, the plates, and the springs all being compatible. The suggested improvements on design are reduced mass, increased number of plates, tighter tolerances, and a needle roller bearing instead of a bush. The Python Clutch has 8 plates and fits without a crankcase spacer (just like the 6-plate Road clutch). AF claim the Python clutch can control increased torque without increasing the clutch lever weight, and that the increased surface area (more plates) also makes for a smooth engagement and longer service life.

The Python crownwheel has a steel ring gear and a CNC, heat-treated, hard anodized aluminium basket, to reduce the mass and maintain durability; thus reducing the mass of the clutch and therefore reducing the inertia of the drivetrain. This should make the engine more responsive and reduce the loading on the gearbox. The result is the gearbox will also have an improved service life and be less likely to be damaged in an extreme event like a missed gear change. Stronger springs are also available (30% increase), to further increase the clutch’s torque carrying capacity should that be required for the ‘big BHP boys’ who like to push the boundaries.

RRP: £380
