This issue we’ve gone a little castle crazy, because who doesn’t love a castle, particularly one you can cosy down in as the wind and snow battle each other outside?

In Fairytale Fonab (p32) you can enter our competition for a chance of winning a stay in a romantic castle in the Perthshire countryside – an idyllic Highlands hideaway, we think you’ll agree.

Meanwhile, in Turrets & tee time (p22), discover one of Scotland’s most picturesque castle hotels, Glenapp Castle, and one of its most luxurious golf hotels: Ayrshire’s tasteful Turnberry.

At Armadale Castle on Skye’s Sleat Peninsula, which you can read all about in The beautiful south (p14), there’s no chance of getting snug, since the castle where Flora Macdonald wed in 1750 now stands in ruin. However, just a couple of miles up the road you’ll receive a warm Gaelic welcome at Hotel Eilean Iarmain.

This issue, we also look back at the origins and evolution of one of Scotland’s most famous whisky brands, Glenfiddich, in Never sit still (p58), and we meet a new generation of knitters putting their own spin on things in Island inspiration (p68).

History buffs are well catered for with a look at the motives behind King James V’s penchant for dressing up in The incognito king (p34), while we shed some light on a forgotten incident during the American Revolutionary War in Not on our watch (p64).

And nally, if you are itching to get back to Scotland, then there can be few better ways of visiting our many isles than on a small ship cruise. We round up some of the best in

Cruise into 2022 (p44). Enjoy.
